With recent developments in technology, taking a cell by biopsy from an IVF (in vitro fertilization) embryo (fertilized egg), examining it at a genetics laboratory and finding whether it's going to be a girl (xx chromosome) or a boy (xy chromosome) is called sex selection.
If a couple wants to select their child's sex, even if they can get pregnant in common ways, they need to start IVF treatment in order to get the embryo. On the third day of her new cycle, overian stimulation is started by injections in order to increase both the number and health of the folicules. The dosage of the injections will depend on the patient's age and her egg reserves. Upon deciding to select the sex of their baby, couples can start with the preparations with counselling from a specialist near them or someone we suggest or preferably at our IVF centre.
The induction period might take 8 to 12 days. When folicules (egg cells) reach a certain size, assisted hatching is done with needles and egg retrieval is scheduled in 36 hours (1,5 days) at our centre. Sperm is collected from the father at the same time when eggs are retrieved and via micro injection ICSI (IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection) they are fertilized into embryos. The growth of the embryos is then monitored and on the third day via pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) the sexes are determined. Two days after sex selection, healthy embryos are chosen according to the sex selected and they are transferred. 12 days after the transfer, ßHCG blood test is done to determine the outcome regarding pregnancy.
Egg collection/retrieval is a simple and painless procedure. It may take about 15-20 minutes under mild anaesthesia. If they wish, couples can return to their hometown/country (ex: Turkey) on the same day, after the procedure. They need to come back to our centre for transfer four days later, or they may prefer to stay at our residences or at a hotel, depending on their work schedule.
